Pessimistic
Journalists across Asia are pessimistic about the future of Thailand.
After Thailand's Military warned Thailand's voters not to vote for bad people (e.g. the opposition party) the journalist say that 'a worst case scenario (of another military coup) can't be ruled out...'
Pre-election closing
On Saturday June 25th at about 18:00 most bars in Pattaya closed, but on almost all popular streets some bars managed it to keep their guest happy with soft drinks and the light of a TV set.
Same situation on Sunday, a bleak and cheerless Pattaya.
Pre-election voting was the reason for the ordered shutdown of the City.
Many revellers switched over to Pattaya's Beach Promenade. The location had 'high season' with many additional faces known from bars.
On Sunday live awoked slowly in 'Special Zone Walking Street' shortly after 19:00, in most other parts of the city at 24:00.
A Thai friend and owner of a few bars here in Pattaya told me: In fact knowbody really knew what was permitted and what not or what will be tolerated. I decided to keep my venues closed until Monday.
A more than stupid regulation:
In my area the neighbours used the night to sit together and to start parties with barbecue, beer and whiskey.
When I came back at about midnight almost everybody was 'mau'!
It seems that on days like this, the only 'dry people' are the tourists.
Sugar-Sugar!
Look out for this sign!
DrugFree Bamboo Bar
In the early hours of June 24th Pattaya's Tourist Police and Pattaya's Narcotics Suppression Bureau raided Pattaya's famous Bamboo Bar at the entry to Walking Street and checked about 200 persons for narcotics. Not one single lady failed the test.
Police also checked the operating licenses for the Bamboo Bar. Police said the checked licenses have expired in 2010. Therefore the bar was ordered to close.
Nevertheless, on Friday night the bar opened as if nothing had happened...
Pit Stop only
for Ferrari & Co. In our January 2011 News Flash we reported about Tukcom's unapproved Ferrari mobile phones.
On June 14th Chonburi Police visited the wellknown Copycat Shopping center, arrested the sellers and confiscated fake Ferrari, Nokia, Apple and Sony Ericsson phones.
The police apparently had good noses: They also found fake perfumes but overlooked the many unlicensed DVDs, CDs and computer software bargains...
Update:
NightWalker just informed us that all the popular copycat products, including Ferrari & BMW, are back in the shops. Pattaya Police plays a Cat & Mouse Game!
On Friday, June 17th, Pattaya Police and a special police force from the Intellectual Property Department of the Royal Thai Police Bureau arrested over 50 vendors of pirated goods along Pattaya Beach Road and at Mike department stores. The Police confiscated over 10'000 items of copycat products.
On our Tour de Pattaya, about a week later, all the shelfes were refilled with the very same products.

Still Empty!
Produced, installed during May 2010 and paid, but never used.
On December 16th the Chief of the Sea Rescue Teams of Pattaya promised to rectify this shortfall in the near future.
Nevertheless, the observation towers are still empty...

Thai Life
I just met an enraged Thai lady.
'Since I am working in Pattaya whole my family - father, mother, my brothers & sisters, even my children as well as almost all of my uncles and aunts - think that my pocket is full of money. Everybody is begging! My phone rings whole the day!' she told me...
Depressed Russians?
According to a recent Russian-German study most Russians are still depressed.
The 'undepressed' minority seems to enjoy the life in Pattaya.
Never believe in a study - unless you made it.
House of Condom reopened!
Last month we had to report that the Child and Women Protection Unit, a division of Police Region 2, raided the House of Condom at the second floor of North Pattaya's CentralCenter and closed the shop.
In the meantime the shop could reopen.
For actions like this we know one word only in Europe: Stupid!
New A Go-Go Club
The name of the new A Go-Go Club at the entry to Soi Diamond is announced as 'Tha Moon Club', which perhaps means 'Thai Moon Club' or simply 'The Moon Club'...
NightWalker is querying the name:
Since Neil Armstrong's spectacular visite of the site on July 20th 1969 almost everybody knows that the moon is an unpopulated desert...

Defiant Thailand
The International Court of Justice has no authority!
Thailand's Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said on May 4th, Thailand will respect the ICJ's decision, but the body has no authority to order Thai troops to retreat. Thai soldiers won't step back from our territory near Preah Vihear temple, which is situated inside the 4.6 square kilometre disputed area.
Acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn is supporting Gen Prawit and repeated that the International Court of Justice in the Hague (ICJ) has no authority to force Thailand to withdraw troops.
It seems that the world has to learn that in Thailand perverse Generals dictate 'law & order' and not an international court.
Update: The World Heritage Centre decided to put the matter on the agenda. Thereupon Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti announced that Thailand have no choice but to withdraw. The decision is to prevent the other side from using this issue to claim our territory, he said. Thailand's walk out of the Unesco has put the country in a bad light. Democracy in Thailand
Thai Army on Alert!
The army is gearing up for possible unrest as the political situation may turn ugly after the July 3rd election. (Ugly in the eyes of the Army and Bangkok's Elite?).
Thai army commander Prayuth Chan-ocha has already put security authorities on alert. The commander has ordered all units in and around Bangkok and those under the 1st Army Region to prepare 200 companies of troops.
Opposition party members say that 'the election rally by the Democrat Party at Ratchaprasong intersection is an attempt to derail the July 3 polls'. 'I learned from friends who are soldiers that some groups of people plan to incite violence during the Ratchaprasong intersection rally, to pave way for the military to step in to keep the situation under control,' said Mr Weng, a core leader of the red-shirt United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).
Almost all polls suggest the Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's Democrats are likely to lose. Polls are predicting that Pheu Thai would win 164 House seats in the constituency system and the (military supported) Democrat Party would take only 83 seats out of 331 constituencies.
China Circus Show

If you stay in Pattaya please visit the Circus yourself. Entry fee is 300 Baht only. The shows start daily at 18:30, 20:00 and 21:30. Please click for NightWalker's Pattaya Latern Show.
New on Soi Buakhaow
The replacement for Soi Buakhaow's Liquide Lounge at the entry to Soi LK Metro will open on July 1st 2011 as Sugar Sugar and will present Pattaya's sweetest A Go-Go and Coyote dancers!
New on Walking Street
A Go-Go closed, refurbished & turned upside down
Lek's Classroom A Go-Go on Soi 2 was closed during the first weeks of June for renovation - and reopened as a 'see through' Coyote Club with an A Go-Go Club in its back.
New on Soi 6
About 50 meters only from Beach Road the Six Tables food & drink restaurant opened on Soi 6. The right place to 'refurbish your body' after a Tour de 6.

A Sign of the Time
Most bars at Best Friend's Bar Complex are closed, including its once popular sparring arena.
A few weeks ago a well-known Pattaya Publication wrote that almost all hotels in the resort are fully booked until mid 2012.
Booked by whom? By the journalist? Most Bars and clubs in the resort as well as Pattaya's shops are still missing the visitors...

The End of Fashion
Pattaya's Fashion Club closed!
An 'all new' Bärzia Club replaced Pattaya's (infamous & expensive) Fashion Club on June 11th 2011. The new club is located on Pattaya's Second Road just in front of Rasputin's Body Massage.
Same ownership as Rasputin Body Massage, NAB Boys Club, Dave Boys Club & Absolute Entertainment Complex Walking Street. Rebranding
Carrefour on the (long?) Way to Big C extra
But how long it will take until Pattaya's citizen will recognize the place with its new name? Carrefour is as known as Walking Street.
Update: On Monday June 13th(!) at 01:00 a short circuit started a fire at a newly installed sign pole. Three fire trucks were sent by Pattaya's fire brigade to put out the fire, but the department store's employees managed to put out the smoky conflagration before the firemen arrived. For outsiders it seems that Big C extra is working with the same crew of electricians as at Big C's North Pattaya branch: During the last few years Big C's CentralCenter already had a few blazes, all triggered by short circuits in its installations. The 'Cambodian' Market Place
Chong Chom, near the Cambodian Border, is known as the Cambodian Market Place, but a closer examination of the goods shows that most of them are 'imported' goods from Big China - as this Tablet PC for 3'300 Baht (without keyboard). The keyboard and its nice etui costs another 350 Baht, but its plug accidentally doesn't fit any connector on the pictured tablet...

Avoid Prostate Cancer - drink Coffee!
Some years ago Nestlé published another study. Their study suggested to eat tomatos to prevent prostate cancer.
I like to eat tomatos and drink a lot of coffee (the real one) since my boyhood.
Nevertheless, a few years ago my doctor told me he needs to remove my prostate.
Today I know it wasn't necessary - in the meantime everybody in that business knows that this urologist was a 'prostate freak' - as many others in his guild.

Are Facebook and Twitter a danger for Thais?
The Experts at the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) found that more Thai people are getting sick: The consumation of cigarettes and alcohols is rising together with technological advancements, the researchers found.
Users of social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter are inevitably victims of advertisements of cigarettes and alcoholic drinks, the experts concluded.
Thailand's Ministry of Public Health estimated that there will be 12.5 million people getting ill this year. Of this number, 78'000 will die, with half of them dying from chronic diseases such as heart disease, coronary disease and diabetes.
Obviously Thai people can't resiste dubious advertisements.

E.coli in Thailand?
False Alarm
On June 09 Thailand's Public Health Ministry announced it had found the deadly e.coli in avocados imported from Spain.
It was a false alarm: The bacteria found in Thailand are harmless.
On June 11 the same people told the press, they found the E.coli bacteria in cabbage imported from Europe.
But German officials said they are now confident that sprouts grown at a farm in the north of the country are the source of the highly virulent strain of bacteria.

Green Technology
Biogas, or methane, is produced by the anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable materials such as manure, sewage and green waste.
There are all sorts of bacteria which didn't exist before which are now produced in biogas fermentation tanks.
They crossbreed and mix with one another - what goes on precisely hasn't really been studied.

Thailand's 3G Chaos
The future of Thailand's new 3G wireless broadband project is still in the cloud.
The acting National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission remains reluctant to allow the CAT, a state telecom enterprise, to import equipment.
CAT Telecom has a contract with True Corporation to install an HSPA network based on the 850-Megahertz frequency. The network will be leased to Real Move, a unit of True Corp.
On the other hand, TOT, also a state owned enterprise, wants to build a 3G network based on HSPA+ technology on the 1900-MHz frequency.
There is also a battle between Thailand's National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission about the right to auction of 3G licences.
Thailand's Central Administrative Court ordered the NTC to halt the auction of 3G licences on the 2100 MHz band following a challenge filed by CAT and later by TOT.
Google's useless Operating System
Google just released it's new Chromium OS in selected countries. The new Operating System is preinstalled on Note- or Netbooks from Acer, Samsung and some other premium manufacturers.
The new operating system is virtually royality free and therefor should make a computer system much cheaper than a notebook running on Microsoft's Windows.
Chrombooks don't have a HDD-drive but an installed SSD [mSATA Solid State Drive] of about 16GB to 30GB and a built in dual-band Wi-Fi and/or World-mode 3G connection.
Google claims that its new OS needs only about 7 seconds to boot.
What makes the new OS almost useless is the fact, that programs and datasets are stored somewhere in the internet but not on your computer.
If the net is down (or slow) it will be simply impossible to do your work or play a game, a song or a movie.
A useless innovation, at least in developing countries like Thailand.
