Health care in Thailand
Thailand's universal health care is provided through three programmes: the social welfare system for civil servants and their families, the social insurance for private employees and the universal insurance system introduced in 2002, which is available to all other Thai nationals.
The Universal Coverage scheme, known as Gold Card or 30 Baht scheme, was introduced in 2002 by the Thaksin Shinawatra government and is gaining worldwide recognition for the quality of its healthcare services.
Gold Card holders are entitled to all types of healthcare at a registered hospital or clinic for 30 baht/consultation, including (most) medicines.
Like almost everything that has been "invented" and put into practice in Thailand, this scheme also has its weak points, for example, the cardholder only receives the favourable services at the hospital or doctor with whom he is registered. If he needs medical care elsewhere, he is asked to pay.
Now, 20 years after the introduction of the Gold Card, these shortcomings are finally being (slowly) eliminated.

PM Office spokesperson Chai Watcharong said Thursday from Jan 7 onwards, people can just use ID card to seek medical treatment from any public hospital in Thailand. This, he adds, is a "new year gift" from the Srettha government.
Not in all public hospitals in Thailand, as the Prime Minister's spokesman Chai Watcharong has claimed, but at least in eight other provinces Thai patients can now access simplified medical services. Let's hope that the current restrictions will soon be lifted nationwide.

Year after year
To combat air pollution, the Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment and of Agriculture and Cooperatives jointly declared war on crop burning and pledged, as they do every year, to tackle one of the main sources of PM2.5 particulate matter.
Burning plants is an inexpensive but environmentally damaging method of preparing fields for the next phase of cultivation. Although it is illegal, farmers still remain under the radar of the authorities.

The election winner must disappear!
The Constitutional Court is expected to give its verdict on the political future of the former leader of the Move Forward party, Pita Limjaroenrat, on 24 January.
Pita Limjaroenrat is still accused of holding shares in a media company that has ceased operating as a media company since its UHF TV frequency licence was revoked in March 2007 and it was delisted from the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 2014 in violation of the Election Act when he registered his candidacy for the general election in May. The Election Commission (EC) took the case to court and sought to strip Pita of his status as a member of parliament.
Thai PBS World Pita to learn about his political future in January
Thai Enquirer reports on its X (formerly Twitter) account on December 25th:
Move Forward Party (MFP) Chairperson of its Advisory Board, Pita Limjaroenrat, and Party Leader, Chaithawat Tulathon, arrived at the Constitutional Court to provide testimonials in a case that could lead to the party's dissolution.
Pita and MFP have been accused by Theerayut Suwannakaysorn, a former lawyer of Buddha Isara, of allegedly seeking to overthrow the constitutional monarchy by advocating for the amendment of the lese-majeste law.
Pita and the party insist that attempting to amend a law in the criminal code through legislative means is permissible under the law, and they have no intention of overthrowing the system.

Thai Enquirer reports on its X (formerly Twitter) account on December 25th:
The Constitutional Court is scheduled to deliver its verdict on the case that may lead to the dissolution of the Move Forward Party on January 31.
The court established this new date following the hearing of testimonies from the Move Forward Party's Advisory Board Chairperson, Pita Limjaroenrat, and Party Leader Chaithawat Tulathon today.
The accusations against Pita and the party, put forth by Theerayut Suwannakaysorn, a former lawyer of Buddha Isara (a defrocked monk who was a co-leader of the now-defunct People's Democratic Reform Committee), allege an attempt to overthrow the constitutional monarchy system by seeking to amend the lese-majeste law.
Preceding this date, the court is set to announce its verdict on Pita's iTV case on January 24. Pita faces allegations from the Election Commission, claiming that he knowingly applied for office while ineligible due to the 42,000 iTV shares he declared as part of his assets before assuming office in 2019.
If found guilty, Pita could face a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Additionally, he may lose his voting rights for 20 years, prohibiting him from participating in elections or holding political offices during that period.

Dan_in_BKK reports on his X (formerly Twitter) account on December 26th:

Thai Enquirer reports on its X (formerly Twitter) account on December 29th:
Move Forward Party Bangkok MP Suphanat Minchaiynunt pointed out 14 main flaws at the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2), which were addressed to Parliament three months ago:
1) All five escalators at the terminal are not functioning, making it hard for people with luggage to commute around the station.
2) There is no elevator, making it difficult for disabled people to commute around the station.
3) Out of 15 fire extinguisher stations, only five are functional.
4) The medical room is closed.
5) The room for breastfeeding is closed.
6) There is no air-conditioning in the waiting area on the platforms, and some people have to sit on the floor.
7) Nobody uses the ticket-selling machines.
8) The pavement is not up to standard for disabled people.
9) There are many dark areas with no lights, which are unsafe.
10) There are abandoned areas where homeless people have moved in.
11) The toilets are in poor condition.
12) The signs are confusing for both Thais and foreigners.
13) Some taxis and motorbikes are overcharging people.
14) There are no connected walkways to an electric train station, which is against public transportation law.
Suphanat said around 60,000-100,000 passengers use the station during holiday periods, so the facilities should be better maintained to provide better safety and conveniences for the passengers. The deteriorating facilities also portray a negative image for tourists who use the station as well.
"This is negative soft power," he said.

Thailand's Land bridge project
Click into the picture for its original size
A dubious project?
Thailand's plan to build a 90km land bridge across its southern region that could allow shipping trade to bypass Malaysia and Singapore is easier on paper than the long-touted Kra Canal, although analysts say it still faces major challenges.
Let's do the maths:
A supertanker transports 79'000'000 litres of crude oil. This would require up to 2'000 road tankers to be loaded, transported and reloaded onto a tanker. Large container ships can carry up to 24'000 containers. Here, too, they would have to be loaded onto lorries or trains, transported and reloaded onto a ship. Two ships would be required for each journey, which would double the fixed costs for loading and unloading.
It doesn't seem worth it to unload cargo, deliver it across Thailand and load it up again.

Scientists appeal for global population control
Nonetheless, Thailand and many other nations around the world are complaining about a worrying decline in birth rates and are calling on their population to remedy this situation as quickly as possible. This is because a declining population brings with it new problems, such as a shrinking labour force and an increased burden on healthcare in connection with an ageing society, as countries such as Japan and South Korea are experiencing.
However, according to a new study commissioned by the Club of Rome, the long-feared "population bomb" may not go off. According to current trends, the world's population will peak at 8.8 billion before the middle of the century and then decline rapidly.
Earlier studies have painted a bleaker picture. Last year, the United Nations estimated that the world population would reach 9.7 billion by the middle of the century and continue to rise for several decades.

Khaosod reports on its X (formerly Twitter) account on January 6th:
Thais need to procreate more or there will be a shortage of workers and taxpayers six decades from now, warns Health Department Director chief Niti-apinyasakul on Sat.
She said in 2022, for the first time, more Thais died than were born, 500,000 versus 480,000.
If the trend continues, Thai population will decrease from 65 to 63 million six decades from now, with 18 million being elderly people versus 14 million working-age population, she said during a talk in Phetchabun province.
She went on to tell listeners to imagine having no Thai pilots, flight attendants at airport or doctors at hospital. Thailand can either follow the Singaporean way by importing more migrant workers, she said, as many Singaporeans no longer want to have babies.
Alternatively, Thailand can go the Swedish way which has been successful in encouraging more procreation among Swedes over the past decade through various incentives.

The CO2 saga
Apparently all the people pushing climate scam have forgotten (or occupied a window seat at school), that plants need CO2 to survive and that plants in turn produce O2, which we need to survive.
Furthermore, 97% of all CO2 emissions are natural. Why are the 3% of emissions attributable to humans so destructive and the other 97% not?
Do you remember? In 1991 the "Club of Rome" wrote in a book: In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill.
Thomas Sowell, a well respected scholar writes in one of his books: Temperatures went up first, and then there was the increase in carbon dioxide. You can't say that A causes B if B happens first... But [the scientists] who are pushing global warming are doing their damnedest to make sure that those who believe the opposite don't get heard in the public.
