Update (July 11th, 2023):
Thailand's Dictator, General Prayut Chan-o-cha announced today his retirement from politics.
He claims that for the past 9 years as prime minister he has protected the nation, religion, and the monarchy including the benefit of the public. These things are bearing fruit for the nation as a whole, he writes on the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party page.
He also thanked the people for supporting the party and himself.
Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, chairperson of the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party (also known as United Thai Nation Party), also resigned from the party.
The two are obviously frustrated that their party has decided to respect the will of the people and support the candidature of Pita Limjaroenrat as Prime Minister.

A majority of Thais have sent the military junta home!
Nevertheless, some military-backed senators have already announced that they will disregard the will of the people and re-elect dictator Prayut Chan-o-cha. as prime minister ....
Moreover, the two parties leading in the election are fighting over the distribution of seats. Once again, it shows that even the pro-democracy parties are often more about prestige and power.
Since the senators appointed by the military junta ultimately determine who leads the country as prime minister, it is quite possible that Thailand's well-being will continue to be determined by a dictator.

Pattaya Monorail
The greatest stupidity is back
Skytrain, Monorail, Pattaya Tram and now the Monorail again, this is how the Khunpleum Clan has been trying to solve the traffic problem in Pattaya for years. They spend millions of baht on feasibility studies and (royally paid) meetings, forgetting that all these means of transport will not remove a single one of these polluting Chinese buses from the resort, as the planned means of transport will not be able to take tourists or their luggage to their hotels.
The Khunpleum plan is to run the monorail in a first phase from the planned - but not yet realised - express train station via North Road past City Hall to Terminal 21 and then via Second Road to Bali Hai. As the plan clearly shows, some shopping centres will be served, but not a single hotel.
The new plan, if implemented, will further deface Pattaya and enrich a few people by millions.

Is it going to work this time?
Pattaya City Hall has announced plans to install 90 5G relay stations in Pattaya (city) and Koh Larn to provide free wifi reception for your smartphone within a radius of about 200 metres.
A similar plan was announced by the then mayor years ago along Pattaya Beach and surprisingly implemented but never really worked.
Let's hope that the Pattaya city administration will have better luck with the new project and satisfy the tourists, at least in the first time. Since this high-tech installation also needs to be maintained, its lifespan is likely to be limited this time as well.

Dengue fever on the rise

Thailand's Department of Disease Control (DDC) reports that it has opened an emergency centre to reduce the number of dengue patients after more than 15'000 people were diagnosed with dengue fever in the first five months of this year alone.
This means that there have been 5.4 times more cases in Thailand so far than in the same period last year.
The DDC also reports that there have already been 13 deaths this year due to Denge fever.
Most mosquito larvae or dengue carriers are found in temples, but schools, offices and factories also provide favourable conditions for the spread of the disease, with children aged five and over forming the largest group of sufferers, the DDC reports.
According to the DDC, Nan, Trat, Chumphon, Chanthaburi and Tak provinces are currently the worst affected.
The Thai Department of Disease Control recommends that people with these symptoms should see a doctor immediately and not buy over-the-counter medicines.
Updated (June 9th, 2023): Thai PBS World Dengue fever on the rise, more elderly people being infected Dengue fever cases are steadily rising and not only among children. 18'000 elderly people have caught the disease in the first five months of this year, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director-general of the Medical Services Department.
Apparently there is a discrepancy between the number of dengue cases published by the Department of Disease Control (DDC) and the Department of Medical Services.

Coffee
How healthy is coffee really?
A cup of healthy espresso
Click into the picture for its original size
Lately, there have been all kinds of articles published on TikTok and other media talking about coffee and its effects in an absolutely stupid way.
A strong cup of coffee may be an indispensable start to the day, but the benefits could go beyond this pick-me-up effect.
Research suggests that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of a number of serious diseases such as type 2 diabetes, fatty liver and some cancers.
And the results of a recently published ten-year study show that moderate coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and early death from any cause.
When we talk about coffee, we mean real unfiltered ground coffee, not its instant variant.
Boiled coffee contains valuable minerals and vitamins:
  • Magnesium for healthy bones and muscle function
  • Potassium for the regulation of blood pressure
  • Vitamin B3 enables the release of energy from food and ensures a healthy nervous system
The European Food Safety Agency says a daily intake of 400mg caffeine, equal to four cups of coffee, is fine for most adults but Pregnant women are advised to stick to 200mg caffeine a day.

Reports suggest the World Health Organization could label the sweetener as possibly carcinogenic.
BBC News Covid pandemic linked to surge in child and teen diabetes
Experts have seen a 'substantial' yet unexplained rise in new cases worldwide since the pandemic.
Bangkok Post Aspartame, the much-debated artificial sweetener
The artificial sweetener aspartame, which is consumed by millions every day as a sugar substitute in products such as diet soft drinks, has long been the topic of fierce debate over its impact on health.
In Thailand as well as in other countries, in addition to Aspartame, Acesulfame potassium is also used to sweeten food and especially fruit juice drinks. This sweetener is also not without controversy. The NutriNet-Santé cohort study found that adults who used Acesulfame potassium had an overall 1.13-fold greater risk of cancer than those who did not use Acesulfame potassium.
However, the accusations should be treated with caution, because we remember that in the last century the sugar industry, with the help of bought scientists, managed to prove that fat, not sugar, makes you fat. This accusation, which was brought into the world by the sugar industry and has been repeated again and again into the present century, has become so firmly entrenched in the minds of many people that they still believe this nonsense today and cannot be dissuaded.
Do not buy low-fat products, they contain a lot of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners.

Despite the lofty name U-Tapao Rayong Pattaya International Airport, the airport, which is still administered by the Royal Thai Navy in Sattahip, offers very limited connections to Pattaya and other destinations such as Rayong.
Passengers have to make do with taxis or organise their own travel.
It is therefore not surprising that the almost unrivaled cab drivers take advantage of this in their own way and charge, for example, up to 850 baht (and more) for the 35 km trip to Pattaya ....

Planning idiots out of touch with reality
Pattaya's highly educated people from Pattaya's Public Works Departments have ordered that the busy Thepprasit Road be given new sewers and a new road surface, as well as an almost continuous directional partition wall. This means that crossing the road at the entrances to Soi 8, Soi 10, Soi Kopai and the entrances to the Outlet Mall and Lotus's supermarket has been stopped.
The solution at the Outlet Mall is particularly ingenious: it is no longer possible for vehicles to enter from the direction of the beach, but as can be seen in the photo above, there is a turning area for motorcyclists about 20 metres before the entrance - at the 30 km sign - which naturally tempts them to steer their vehicles against the traffic to the Outlet Mall!
