Visakha Bucha Day
On Saturday, May 18th, Buddhists are celebrating the Visakha Bucha Day.
Thailand's law prohibits the sale of alcohol on Makha Bucha Day, Visakha Bucha Day, Asalaha Bucha Day and Buddhist Lent holidays; therefore all bars and entertainment venues close from midnight May 17th until midnight May 18th.
Since this holiday falls on a Saturday, Government Offices, Banks and many businesses will be closed on Monday, May 20th.
Latest News on Health Insurance
Khaosod English reports that Thailand's Tourism Ministry Secretary Chote Trachu announced that Foreign Tourists visiting Thailand will soon have to pay 100 Baht on arrival on top of any visa fees.
Furthermore, Thailand's Tourism and Sports Ministry is considering the possibility of imposing an additional tourist levy, Bangkok Post writes.
Secretary Chote Trachu expects that 3.8 billion baht will be raised from 38 million tourists who visit Thailand annually.
As you can see - e.g. read - Thailand likes to use its tourists as milch cows.

Health Insurance Mandatory
The Nation reports that Thailand's Cabinet has made health insurance mandatory for Foreigners aged 50 years and above seeking long-term stay in Thailand.
An insurance policy must offer up to 40'000 Baht coverage for outpatient treatment and up to 400'000 Baht for inpatient treatment.
Foreigners will likely have to buy health insurance from July onwards.
Clarification from the Immigration Office:
The vast majority of longstay expats in Thailand do not require health insurance to obtain or to renew their 12-monthly permits...

On May 8th, 2018, Thailand's National Council for Peace and Order announced that all speedboats have to be moved from Pattaya Beach to Bali Hai to free Pattaya Beach Road from tour buses.
Pattaya Mail reports that no one, neither the authorities of Pattaya nor the Thai army, has ever tried to enforce the ban.
Tourist buses still are embarking and disembarking passengers on Pattaya Beach Road.
Syphilis warning
Thailand's Department of Disease Control (DDC) says that the rate of syphilis infection among Thai teens and young adults is rising at an alarming rate.
Data shows that 36.9% of new syphilis infections recorded last year were found among those aged between 15 to 24.
The increasing prevalence of syphilis can be attributed to the lack of awareness of safe sex practices - especially among Thai youths, Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai, director-general of the DDC, says.
Dengue warning
Thailand's Public Health Ministry reports that twenty-seven people have died from dengue hemorrhagic fever in Thailand so far this year.
It's the highest fatality rate for the same time period in the past five years.
The Ministry estimates there would be about 10'000 new cases of dengue fever a month or about 95'000 dengue fever patients nationwide for the whole of this year.
According to the Bureau of Epidemiology, 18'000 people were infected with the dengue fever virus from January 1st to May 1st this year, and 27 of them, including 12 children, had died.
The mosquito-borne infection causes a sudden high fever for 2-5 days along with severe headaches and pain of eye sockets and joint/muscle, loss of appetite, vomiting, coughing without running nose, skin rash, and bleeding from gum.
Dengue fever also could lead to a shock episode, failure of the blood circulatory system, kidney and liver failure, and even death.
Heavily in Debt
According to the Thai Labour Reconciliation Committee (TLRC) around 95% of Thai blue-collar workers are heavily in debt.
In another survey conducted by the Bangkok Poll of Bangkok University, 42% of its respondents said they earned just enough to cover their expenses without any chance to save anything.
Thailand's weak economy and the exploding cost of consumer goods are aggravating the situation further.
Beggars face Fine and Jail
According to a new Thai Law, Beggars face fine and jail, General Anantaporn Kanjanarat, head of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), said.
Beggars arrested for panhandling for the first time would be fined at 500 Baht, the second time 2'000 Baht, the third time 5'000 Baht and the fourth time and above 10'000 Baht, the Minister added and promised that stickers warning against handing cash to beggars in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cambodian and Myanmar would soon be placed at tourists attractions, airports and state offices.

I'm Choke's Friend
A Cop was removed from duty by his boss - Thung Song Station's Superintendent Chokdee Rakwattanawong - because the Policeman asked the driver of a car for his licence.
The man refused to comply and claimed to be Chief Justice of the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, Region 8, and a friend of 'Choke', the nickname of the Superintendent of Thung Yai Police Station.
But while the Policeman insisted that it was standard procedure, the Judge drove off without a word.
We believe that the Superintendent and the Judge should be relieved of their duties, not the Policeman.

Pattaya's new visitors replacing the badly missing Farangs
Most publications say that the event takes place from 18:00-23:00, but the Pattaya CityHall website claims that the show lasts from 16:00-24:00.
Other sources say the Festival will happen from 19:00 to 22:00.
The Official Opening of the Festival is scheduled for 19:00 (on both days?).
Ceremonies in honor of His Majesty the King will take place on May 24th at 19:30.
No information was available about the beginning of the fireworks.
City Hall invites Thai people to wear yellow shirts.
Pattaya City's information policy is still completely useless
The main event on Saturday, May 25th, was interrupted at 21:15 by a thunderstorm. Most people left the Beach Area in a hurry and went home immediately.
The second part of the event continued about 2 hours later at 23:15 with light rain and practically no spectators.
In the VIP area a rock band with an absolutely unmusical singer provided 'entertainment' and aching ears.
Relocating the festival into the rainy season shows the stupidity of the organizers

Thailand's 'Free' and 'Fair' Election
On March 24th, 2019, Thailand's Military Junta holds its first Election after almost 5 years of dictatorships. They called it 'free' and 'fair'.
After the first results where published, it get clear very fast that there will be some kind of manipulation to extent the military rule.
The Election Commission has committed an act of unthinkable blunder by failing to stick to a clear and universally accepted formula for the allocation of party-list MP seats. Instead of making the formula clear before the election, Pravit Rojanaphruk writes.
It was after the election only that the EC presented a few different formulas to allocate the seats.
For additional Information please read Pravit Rojanaphruk on Khaosod English and 'Free' and 'Fair' Elections in Thailand.
The ineffective orders of Thailand's Dictator
On April 2nd, 2019, Thailand's Dictator General Prayuth Chan-ocha, used his power to order the officials to solve the problem within 7 days.
Satellite pictures show that nothing ever changed since the Dictator's ultimatum: At 01:47 on April 28th the images reported 152 man-made fires in Mae Hong Son.
In October 2016 the ruling Military Junta issued on order to solve the traffic problems on Bangkok's 21 main roads in just one month. As expected by everyone - except the Junta itself - the stupid order had no or very little consequences.
Honey & Brown Suger vs White Sugar
Honey & Brown Sugar as unhealthy as White Sugar!
There are many different types of sugars we add to our baking or hot & cold drinks such as white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar and honey. But when we are looking at a packaged product the ingredients list will have many more options still. Corn syrup, palm sugar, molasses, maple syrup and agave nectar are but a few.
Despite the large variety of sugars, they are very similar nutritionally. They are comprised predominantly of glucose, fructose and sucrose, which are the basic forms of sugar. Glucose and fructose are slightly different in chemical structure, while sucrose is a sugar composed of one glucose and one fructose.
White sugar is the final product of the processing and refining of sugarcane or beet. During the refining process, moisture, minerals and compounds that give sugars their colour are removed, and white refined sugar is formed. The byproduct containing the removed compounds during sugar refining is known as molasses.
Brown sugar is refined white sugar with varying amounts of molasses added.
Honey is sugar-rich nectar collected by bees from a wide variety of flowers. Fructose is the main sugar found in honey, followed by glucose and sucrose. Honey containes about 17% water. Try to avaoid fructose at all if you are a person with type 2 diabetes. Honey is also high in calories.
In the end, sugar in our body is still sugar and everyone should try to cut down their sugar intake.
Scientists vs Scientists
In 1972 John Yudkin, a British scientist sounded the alarm that sugar – and not fat – was the greatest danger to our health. But his findings were ridiculed and his reputation ruined.
How did the world’s top nutrition scientists get it so wrong for so long?
Perhaps you remember the year 1980 when the US government issued its first Dietary Guidelines. The guidelines shaped the diets of hundreds of millions of people. The most prominent recommendation was to cut back on saturated fats and cholesterol. Therefore consumers replaced steak and sausages with pasta and rice, butter with margarine and vegetable oils, eggs with muesli, and milk with low-fat milk or orange juice. But instead of becoming healthier, they grew fatter and sicker.
The guidelines did not achieve their objective. They led to a decades-long health catastrophe.
How did the world’s top nutrition scientists get it so wrong for so long?
The FDA (the Food and Drug Administration), the AHA (the American Heart Association) as well as the WHO (the World Health Organization) do not conduct their very own research. They collect data they recieve from universities as well as food and chemical companies all over the world. Then they make their own conclutions and recommendations, most of them with very friendly 'help' from lobby organizations and their lobbyists.
Independent scientists therfore have a hard time against the overwhelming majority of sponsored research results.
