That's Pattaya!
Pattaya's Walking Street started the New Year with a power blackout!
Just when the patrons in the bars and restaurants prepared to welcome the New Year, Pattaya's famous Walking Street suffered a major power cut...
No comment from Big Mouth Pattaya, he celebrated his party at Bali Hai with a big firework at 24:00.

That's News Flash!
We missed Pattaya's Bedrace on January 27th.
Nevertheless, you can enjoy some very nice pictures from one of Pattaya's most funny event on Pattaya Days!

MiXX customs?
There are reports that three French men were being beaten by five security guards in the MiXX Discotheque, located at the notorious Bali Hai Entertainment Plaza.
The guards had mistakenly assumed the French men had thrown ice in the disco.
The guards beaten the tourists with batons, brass knuckles and stun guns...

What makes Bangkok happy?
A Suan Dusit Poll asked Bangkokians aged between 20 and 45 years.
32% (but mostly 20-25 years old women) said a smartphone or mobile is the device that makes life good.
The mobilephone is followed by television sets with 24%, notebooks or tablets with 23% and MP3 players with 5%.
If Susan Dusit would conduct a poll in Pattaya, they should also include a gadget known as Farang.
I am confident that it will outperform every single mobile device...

Pattaya Police provoked Traffic Chaos on North Road!
On January 8th Pattaya Police provoked a Traffic Chaos on Pattaya North Road.
More than 500 Police Officers from Pattaya's Police Divisions had to attended a parade held in front of Pattaya City Hall and needed one lane of Pattaya's North Road to park their vehicles.
The meeting was led by Police General Adul, the National Police Commissioner and supported by his Deputies, the Deputy Provincial Governor and the Mayor of Pattaya.
During the next 30 days more than 600 officers are taking part in an operation which is set to target those who use and distribute drugs.
According to the Police General 99% of all arrestees in Pattaya have been found to be involved in illegal drugs. That crime must be reduced to 'zero' within the 30 day period to improve the image of Pattaya the National Police Chief told the local Police.

2012 was a bad year for Thailand's Police Organisations
Corrupt policemen have been accused of many of 2012's biggest murders, robberies and drug crimes.
In almost evey larger crime here in Thailand at least one member of Thailand's Police was involved.
Bank robbering, the murder of influent people, transportation and distribution of illegal drugs and the organisation of illegal gambling are obviously the prefered working places of Thailand's Policemen.
Thailand's Police Organisations are known for being inefficient, lazy, unskilled and corrupt.
I am your best friend!
Smiling Police mascots can't change the bad image of Thailand's Police. Police theirselves have to change their behaviour.

Interested how Pattaya's Police Works?
Their websites tell you all:
pattayapolice.com
Pattaya Police on Facebook.
If you can get some information they are completely outdated!
Not even the Organisation Chart is up-to-date!

Pattaya's 'highly professional' Policemen...
... do not wear gloves:
Pieces of evidence are wandering from one hand to the other, from Policeman to Policeman, completely unprotected!
They obviously take care that all fingerprints from a estimated delinquent can't be recovered.
It's common practice: You can fellow it almost daily on local TV stations.
It's hard to believe, but Pattaya's Policemen are working like dilettantes!

No Parking!?
No parking between 19:00 and 03:00
Parking not allowed between 19:00 and 03:00 the signs on South Road between Pattaya's Beach Road and Second Road tells.
Nevertheless, the area is still full of vehicles - everybody is ignoring the signs, including our lovely but lazy Police!
So why the signs stay still in place?

Extorting Police...
A video published on Youtube shows how an officer from Bangkok Police extort a 50'000 Baht bail from an obviously innocent cashier.
Pol Lt Col Choosak Chankwarng told the lady that she was under arrest for conspiring to sell counterfeit goods and must pay at least 50'000 Baht bail to go home...

Tukcom without Samsung Copies
(for the next few days)!
On January 9th visitors couldn't find any copycat products of Samsung's Tablets and Smartphones anymore.
The Police was faster and confiscated them before the shops could sell them.
Some shops on the 2nd floor of the notorious shopping center were almost empty, others had to close completely.
But we know by experience that it will take a few days only until the illegal goods will be back for another one or two months.
Update (Jan. 15th):
As expected, Samsung copies are back at most shops on Tukcom's 2nd floor.
Copies of Apple tablets and smartphones too. All 'dr.dre' - products on display are Original Copycat products.
Samsung and 'dr.dre' copies are on display at the 2nd floor of BigC Extra! on Pattaya Central Road too.
Update (Jan. 18th):
Police raided Tukcom's 2nd floor again, arrested 27 vendors and confiscated mobile phones and other smart devices bearing Apple and Samsung brandnames worth of 7 Million Baht.
Update (Jan. 19th):
The copycats are already back at the shops.

The flying Nightmare
Boeing Dreamliner
Boeing's Dreamliner:
Fuel leaks, failed electrical generators, oil leak inside an engine, a crack in the window on the pilot's side of the cockpit, smoke in the cockpit, improperly assembling, etc., etc. A never ending list of problems.
Both Japanese airlines, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airline (JAL), decided on January 16th to ground all their 24 Dreamliners.
On January 17th all airlines using Boeings 787 grounded the jets.
US regulators have ordered a review of the 787 Dreamliner plane. The incidents put a question mark over the safety of Boeing's flagship plane.
On January 16th the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered US airlines to stop using 787s.
Our source insists that Boeing's Dreamliners are assembled in the USA and not in Thailand, but a quarter of the plane is manufactured in Britain.

Why Boeing calls its
B-787 Dreamliner?
The Aircraft is capable to fly in its engineers' dreams only.

The B-787 is safe!
Boeing chairman and CEO Jim McNerney insisted the 787 is safe. We stand behind its overall integrity, he said.
We agree: The Dreamliner is safe - as long it isn't in the air!

Amsterdamaged
When we drove our motorcycle on January 1st through Pattaya's popular Soi 6 we observed that Amsterdamaged was closed down.
But on January 2nd the venue was open. It even had some ladies in front waiting for customers.
We were told that the bar was closed because of a change in ownership.
The new owner(s) announced to change the name of the venue to Pussy Bar.
It will mark the end of the failed Amsterdamaged experience.
The bar opened on May 2010 as a successor of the Love Club.
At the day of opening myLady™ already predicted that the bar will flop.
Thais are used to work in a group - and sometimes as a team - but sitting alone in a window, on a small and uncomfortable chair without any possibility to watch TV, that's not Thailand's way of life, she told me then.

Nevertheless, no new sign yet, the Amsterdamaged ad is still in use.

2012 is the Year of English Speaking, the Thai Ministry of Education announced.
The program will be initiated in schools and will involve plenty of academic activities. It will let teachers and students have opportunities to speak English and build their confidence in using it without excessive concern about grammatical errors.

It's known around the world that Pattaya has a very lazy Police. Police helps only if a case does not degenerate into work, if your Embassy supports your case with the help of the press or if it's an order from Thailand's Prime Minister. Otherwise nothing will happen.

Smoke over Jomtien
On January 17th it simply got to hot for a car: It bursted into flames. Fortunately all happened near Jomtien's new fire station. Nevertheless, the firebrigade needed about 30 minutes to stop the fire completely. No danger for the health of the people, we were told.

There are currently two pedestrian lights only working in Pattaya respectively Jomtien. The Dolphins supported one on Jomtien's Beach Road, at the entry to Soi 5 (Immigration Office) and the one on Pattaya North Road, located in front of Pattaya City Hall and Tesco/Lotus. Tesco/Lotus Promotion Scam?
In its leaflet, valid from January 3rd to January 29th 2013, Tesco/Lotus announces a promotion for the Nikon 1-J1 camera. Tesco/Lotus claims that the camera is built around a 20-megapixel sensor.
That's wrong!
Nikon never built this camera with a 20-megapixel sensor.
The Nikon 1-J1 uses a 10-megapixel sensor 'only'!
Last year Nikon replaced the Nikon 1-J1 by the Nikon 1-J2. A Nikon 1-J3 will hit the shops during February 2013. It features a larger 14.2 megapixel CX-format CMOS image sensor and a slightly longer range 10-30mm zoom lens.

PS: In its brochure valid from December 13th - January 2nd Tesco/Lotus already was touting the very same camera with the very same (wrong) specification!

Watchara Yamaha Fino Scam
Watchara Marine, an authorized Yamaha dealer on Sukhumvit Road, placed this advertisement all over Pattaya. The banner suggests that the company sells Yahama's most popular Fino scooter for 24'xxx Baht only.
The advertisement is a scam.
Watchara Marine sells a scaled down version of Yamaha's Spark Nano moped only for the announced price, without electric starter and a drum brake instead of the usual front mounted disk brake. It has a 80cc engine instead of the usual 110cc or 115cc built into the Nano. The pictured Yamaha Fino has a 125cc engine.

Russians boost Pattaya's Inflation Rate!
Russians boost Pattaya's Inflation Rate!
There is an Apartment House in Naklua that was popular among Farangs for many years. It provided nice rooms fitted with furniture, TV, refrigerator and warm & cold water for 4'500 Baht/month. The monthly rate even included the free use of a clean swimming pool.
On October 2012 the dream from a very reasonably priced long-stay in Pattaya ended abruptly. The management told its tenants that starting from November 2012 they have to pay 8'500 Baht/month.
But this wasn't the end of the nightmare: At the beginning of December 2012 the management contacted its occupants again. It told them that from January 2013 the price of the rooms will be calculated on a daily basis: 850 Baht/day. Longterm costumers will get a special discount and will have to pay 750 Baht/night only. (25'500 Baht/month respectively 22'500 Baht/month!)
The lovely management announced no renovation of the rooms or the house, but informed its clients that they made a long-term contract with a tour agency from Russia.
During a recent meeting between Thai and Russian officials and tour operators, the embassy counselor informed Pattaya's officials about Pattaya's increasingly negative image in Russia.
Russian's Federal Agency for Tourism (Rosturism) also mentioned the disparity in the prices charged to Thais and Russians.
But obviously Russian tour operators are boosting Pattaya's Inflation Rate themself! With the high commission they collect they raise the prices of the rooms and all the other goods and services.

PS: A few weeks ago I noticed that a street vendor here in Pattaya sells its goods up to 50% more expensive to his clients from Russia. I ask him why Russian tourists have to pay more than other farangs. Russians are unfriendly, get crazy if I don't understand their language, always ask for a discount - and never smile, he told me.

Pattaya's Condominiums are 50% too Expensive!

Think before buying!
During September 2012 a well-known architect from Switzerland visited Pattaya. His intention was to relax on the Beach of Pattaya.
But after spending the fist day on Pattaya's dirty and noisy beach he decided to stay at the swimming pool of his hotel and to rent a motorcycle to explore Pattaya's surroundings.
During his tours on the bike Pattaya's many old, new, unfinished or simply announced Condominiums attracted his attention and he decided spontaneously to inspect some newly finished and some older ones. Obviousily an 'occupational disease', he told me.
His observation: Not one single condominium he inspected is worth the money the sellers were asking for!
The quality of the used material and the quality of the work are well below international standards. Most of the walls are between 50 and 75mm 'strong' and provide almost no isolation. Doors and windows never closed completely. Running air conditioners under this circumstances will get extremly expensive!
The included furniture too were of mediocre quality only. Some even had a veneer made from paper! After a few cleanings it will dissolve itself! Almost all the fittings at kitchen and bath rooms were installed by fumblers.
Not one of the visited condominiums had a emergency power generator, not even for the elevators. In many of the inspected condominiums the security systems didn't work correctly.
Maintenance too seems to be a 'foreign word' in this part of the world. In a few years only a new condominium degenerates to a dark, neglected and dirty place with corridors having the charm of a (western) jail...
Paying 1 million Baht (or more) for such a 30-35sqm flat is 'daylight robbery', he told me. For the same price, or even less, Thais can buy a small town house. They don't get a better quality home but about 100sqm living space and a property they don't have to share with other people.
Townhouse
Condominiums on Jomtien's Second Road.

Before you buy a flat in a condominium do not forget to check if it provides some space for waste disposal. A nearby Soi is perfect and very convenient. It gives you the feeling to live in or above a slum area. The stench is priceless - and adds some extra value to your property!

A mother forced her 13-year-old daughter to marry a 34-year-old man in Lop Buri. The man came into the girls room and forced her to have sex with him. When she told the incident her parents, they offered her as his bride for 2'000 Baht. When the police questioned the man, his parents, and the victim's parents, the man and his relatives protested that he had done nothing wrong. They told the Police that there were other men in the village who had married and lived with girls who were 12 or 13 years old. Thailand has a law protecting children below the age of 15 to get married.

Thailand's Immigration Police announced that it will crack down on transnational criminals this year. The Immigration Bureau says hotels are popular targets among thieves from Latin American countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Guatemala. They often steal valuables from elderly and female hotel guests, from homes and jewellery shops. Other transnational criminals are from Africa, from Iran and Iraq. These criminals are involved in the drug trade. The Iranian and Iraqi suspects often smuggle crystal methamphetamines into Thailand from Afghanistan. Criminals from South Asia are often involved in document and passport forgery. Chinese, Taiwanese and Hong Kong nationals are involved in telephone scams which fool Thais in transferring money to them. Mafia-style crimes are commited by criminals from Japan and South Korea. They are collecting protection fees from Japanese and Korean businessmen in Thailand. Russians are running prostitution rackets in major tourism provinces. Criminals from Malaysia, Singapore, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania are often involved in forging credit cards. Filipinos, Indonesians and Vietnameses are involved in crooked business investments and gambling, they also work illegally as restaurant staff, singers and language teachers. And last but not least the criminals from Europe and America: With their knowledge of advanced technologies, they hatch computer-related crimes.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) Myth
A few weeks ago JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association) published a survey saying that severely obese does not cut life expectancy, in contrary it even can extend life expectancy.
The researchers at the US National Centre for Health Statistics looked at 97 studies involving nearly 2.9 million people to compare death rates with Body Mass Index (BMI). The study said 'overweight was associated with significantly lower all-cause mortality'.
As expected, the study has caused controversy among obesity experts. One expert labelled the findings a 'pile of rubbish'.
I'm very sorry, but all these expert forget that the widely used Body Mass Index is rubbish itself:
BMI numbers are wrong for body builders, certain athletes and pregnant women, patients with anorexia nervosa. BMI cannot be applied to children, it also shows false result when adults are shorter than 150 cm, or taller than 190 cm. And last but not least: If an Indian, an Asian and a European have the same BMI, the Indian and the Asian may be found to have greater amount of body fat than the European.
Don't use the Body Mass Index. It's rubbish! But be assured:
The BMI will be replaced in a few years by a new stupidity!

Update January 23rd 2013: The (stupid) replacements are already here: One is called A Body Shape Index, or ABSI for short. It is based on crunched numbers of 14'000 non-pregnant adults and is putting waist circumference in perspective with weight and height. An other one is known as Body Adiposity Index or BAI and makes body fat estimates based on hip-width and height measurements. Both still need some fine tuning, doctors and scientists say...

Dangerous Hair Conditioners
Almost all hair conditioners contain positively charged molecules called cationic surfactants. The positively charged surfactants in hair conditioner are attracted to the negative charges in your hair, and do not rinse out completely with water.
All surfactants comprise an 'oily part' and a 'watery part'. The watery part - called the hydrophile - is what sticks to the hair; it contains the positive charge. The oily part - called the hydrophobe - is what gives the surfactant its conditioning ability, as it smooths the hair and gives it weight.
Unfortunately the oily hydrophobes not only smooth the hair, they also 'smooths' the ceramics in (Thailand's) shower rooms. they make them slippery. Slippery ceramics make the showerrooms the most dangerous places in any house, flat or hotel room, not only in Thailand, but all over the world.
Eminent falls and slips in showerrooms (and bathrooms) are one of the leading causes of accidental deaths. Be careful!
